Chapter 21

Jade

The pounding in her skull was relentless, hammering with each step she took down the brightly lit halls of the Training Center. She shouldn’t even have been there, not after what had happened the night before, but she needed to see Darren, to warn him. Restless energy had filled the warehouse since Ash had pulled his men from the fight, licking their wounds and whatever egos were still intact. Kyler had sustained the most severe injury of the group. It would be a few days before he was back on his feet and weeks before the wounds faded to scars he would carry for the rest of his life. They should have found some solace in the fact that no one was more seriously injured, but the cloud over the group proved that they already suspected what Jade knew to be true. They had only escaped with cuts and bruises because Ash had allowed them to; next time, he may not decide to be so gracious.

It surprised Jade that Ash had bothered with the politics involved with playing nice with Alpha Power at all. The violence he displayed was much more his style, but he had always been a fan of games. Winners always seemed to be. This game was one they would all be players in for a while, and Jade did not want him to get his hooks in Darren the way he already had them in his father.

The afternoon sun glared down on the yard behind the center, the rough circle of warriors in training sweating beneath it. Jade had a perfect view from the third-floor window to watch the wolves pair up to practice hand-to-hand combat. The instructor stood off to the side, calling out instructions, where Darren usually would have stood. Scanning the yard, Jade tried to calm her pounding heart as she scrutinized each of the fighting wolves’ faces. Darren was nowhere to be seen.

Maybe his father gave him a different assignment for the day, she reasoned. There were hundreds of explanations as to why he would have missed training for the day that didn’t involve Ash. Unfortunately, she was having a hard time believing any of them.

“What are we looking for?” a lighthearted voice asked just behind her shoulder, their breath tickling her cheek. Whirling around, Jade held back a snarl as she came face to face with the owner of the voice, a horrifyingly familiar voice.

“What are you doing here, Ash?” she snapped. She had avoided the man for years, and now it seemed as if he was everywhere she turned. He shrugged his shoulders innocently as if he was having a normal conversation between friends.

“I mentioned to Darren Power how confusing the territory can be to newcomers, and he offered to give me a tour of the place. I gotta say I’m a little surprised at your behavior. I didn’t think you were one to gawk at the brainless, shirtless brutes, but I guess there are new things everyone can learn about you, isn’t there?” he grinned, peeking over her shoulder to the wolves below.
